There is MMMagic in the air!

Nia Friends,
Magical moments happen all the time in our lives. Taking time out to notice, give gratitude and bring awareness to the sensations in our body heightens the magic of living.
In Nia, we like to create the ultimmmate experience, as if this is our last moment. Living in our body, experiencing life to its fullest, and appreciating every moment we have on this earth is the ultimmmate!
Ultimmmate… Music, Movement, Magic! The music of our heart, the movement of our breath, the magic of our unique spirit. Music, Movement, Magic is the focus for 2011 at The Synergy Studio, and the focus for my routine adaptation.
I hope you will join me today at 4:00 for the taping of my routine Dunia! Please wear black for the video shoot… and get ready for fun!
Thank you all for your support and love,
Adelle

We will play with the MMM focus all week with different routines… See you on the dance floor!
My classes this week: Today for Dunia taping 4:00pm, Tuesday 6:45am, Wednesday 9:15am, Fun Friday 5:30pm

Imagine the Possibilities… for TED

Adelle Brownlee Brewer: A Seven-Minute Workout That Can Change the World

Imagine if everyBody in the world started their day with a seven-minute workout that realigned their bones, settled their mind, and prepared them for the tasks ahead? Imagine the possibilities…

Nia 5 Stages is a practice of retracing the body’s developmental process. The idea was inspired by Stanley Keleman, author of Emotional Anatomy and Your Body Speaks Its Mind. Years of practice and research by Debbie Rosas, co-founder of Nia Technique, led to the development of a program called “Nia 5 Stages,” which is today offered as a part of Classic Nia classes, in stand-alone Nia 5 Stages classes, and in-depth Nia 5 Stages trainings. It is a physical practice based on the five stages of human development: Embryonic, Creeping, Crawling, Standing, and Walking.

By moving through these stages daily, my body is allowed to re-align, explore its potential, and self-heal. Doing the Nia 5 Stages in a short seven-minute workout, my body, mind, and emotions re-pattern, energize and condition.

The first stage, Embryonic, is circular, fluid and dynamic. Rolling, I move as if I am in water, suspended and supported to move freely. Non-verbal, I allow my body to cook all four sides by moving from front to back, side to side, reaching out and drawing into center.

The second stage, Creeping, is linear, lizard-like, with my hips facing down resting on the earth. One leg is long and extended, and my other knee draws up, freeing my hips to facilitate forward movement. Using my hands and forearms to move forward, my spine is extended, my eyes look out and my feet are sunny side up.

The third stage, Crawling, is bear-like, with a tabletop architecture. One hand reaches as I crawl looking out in the world, belly soft and hanging down with gravity. My spine naturally curves developing agility, mobility and strength. As I crawl with feet sunny side up, I adapt my movement so my neck, shoulder blades and ankles remain relaxed.

Standing, the fourth stage is stable, vertical and squatting, monkey-like. I build strength and flexibility by resting into gravity. One foot is flat on the earth for stability, while the other foot rests on the ball. Shifting from side to side, finding comfort and ease, my ribcage, arms and hands are free to move and explore the space as I prepare to push down and rise into the fifth stage, Walking.

Walking is a vertical, mobile, flexible, and stable moving architecture. I push down in the earth to rise, first walking on the balls of my feet with heels up. When my body is ready, I drop my heels and allow them to lead my walk, rolling through onto my whole foot.

The Nia seven-minute workout begins with practicing a minute in each stage. The sixth minute is spent getting up and down off the floor, in my own organic way and time. The final minute is spent in laughter… fifteen seconds on my back, fifteen seconds on my belly, fifteen seconds sitting, and fifteen seconds standing.

Seven minutes of transformational movement. Movement that has increased my energy and vitality, improved my posture and alignment, and created a deep sense of relaxation comparable to meditation. A seven-minute practice that has helped me release tension and tightness, and over time regain flexibility, agility, mobility, strength and stability, and reclaim my joint pliability and muscle balance.

Imagine if everyBody in the world started their day with seven minutes that realigned and re-centered their body, mind and emotions?

Imagine the impact on health care, longevity, and world peace. Would we all get along better if we felt good?

Imagine the possibilities…

My Body as a Symbol

My body is a symbol of elegance, power, suppleness, and solidity.

When dancing throughout my day, I activate my witness and use symbology to mold and shape my form… energizing the movement with the five sensations that keep me healthy and fit… flexibility, agility, mobility, strength and stability. Releasing into gravity, as well as lifting up and out brings my body into a state of balance.

Awareness of breath as flowing, healing energy and using sound has conditioned my lungs, diaphragm, intercostals, and abdominal muscles, constantly shaping and re-shaping my body as a symbol of vitality.

Dancing, sitting, playing, rolling, and lying on the floor relieves my lower back pain that has been present for many years. I have an extra vertebra in my lower lumbar spine, demanding more awareness for space and the need to create it as I move and release into gravity. Flexion, extension, axial rotation and lateral flexion all help the daily self-healing of my spine and bring it into alignment and homeostasis. When infusing my movement with yoga and modern dance, the symbology of stability and balance bring strength to my spine and core area.

Knowledge of the horizontal structure of my feet that are supporting me and dancing barefoot has restored their strength and flexibility as well as the strength of my lower leg muscles after walking many years in shoes. Even in most traditional dance classes, my feet were clad in some type of shoe, including toe shoes that cramped their structure. Now my feet are happy feet!

Practicing the 5 Stages has been transformational for the conditioning of my body. Playing with the architecture of each stage… circular, linear, four-point tabletop, stable and vertical to mobile and vertical… has improved my posture and grace, and reclaimed my joint mobility and muscle balance.

My body is a symbol of the balance of Yin and Yang, relaxed, alert and waiting… Now I Am.. conditioned and ready.

Dance into Discovery! Nia this week…

Nia Friends!
Joanie and I had a great week at RanchONia re-discovering the joys of a Nia White Belt Intensive. We shared the experience with 7 new White Belts and 5 friends who are also training to become Nia trainers. We were out in the country at Helen Terry’s beautiful ranch, dancing, learning and preparing to teach the White Belt with Holly Natasi here in San Antonio in two short weeks!
Dancing into Discovery will be our focus this week, as we dance the potential of our 200 bones and 700 muscles! In Nia, we learn about our anatomy through discovering ‘Your Body’s Way’ of moving… and also ‘The Body’s Way’ in our x-Ray anatomy, White Belt Principle #10.
Bones provide our structure… Ligaments attach bone to bone and provide stability and mobility… Muscles wrap the bones giving us strength, agility, and flexibility.
As you read this, put one hand over the other forearm and play like you are opening a door. Can you feel the two bones in the forearm rotate over one another? They are the only two bones in the body that do this magical movement.
How cool is that?
Your Body’s Way… the potential of 200/700… Let’s Dance into Discovery this week!
See you on the dance floor…

Gabrielle Roth’s wise words… This is our dance.

Each of us is a moving center, a space of divine mystery. And though we spend most of our time on the surface in the daily details of ordinary existence, most us hunger to connect to this space within, to break through to bliss, to be swept away into something bigger than us.

As a young dancer, I made the transition from the world of steps and structures to the world of transformation and trance by exposure to live drumming. The beats, the patterns, the rhythms kept calling me deeper and deeper into my dance.

Being young, wild and free, it didn’t dawn on me that in order to go into deep ecstatic places, I would have to be willing to transform absolutely everything that got in my way. That included every form of inertia: the physical inertia of tight and stressed muscles; the emotional baggage of depressed, repressed feelings; the mental baggage of dogmas, attitudes and philosophies. In other words, I’d have to let it all go — everything.

At the time, I was teaching movement to tens of thousands of people and, in them, I began to witness my own body/spirit split. Between the head and feet of any given person is a billion miles of unexplored wilderness. I yearned to know what was going on in that wilderness, not only in me, but in everyone else as well.

And so, movement became both my medicine and my meditation. Having found and healed myself in its wild embrace, I became a mapmaker for others to follow, but not in my footsteps, in their own. Many of us are looking for a beat, something solid and rooted where we can take refuge and begin to explore the fluidity of being alive, to investigate why we often feel stuck, numb, spaced-out, tense, inert, and unable to stand up or sit down or unscramble the screens that reflect our collective insanity.

The question I ask myself and everyone else is, “Do you have the discipline to be a free spirit?” Can we be free of all that binds and bends us into a shape of consciousness that has nothing to do with who we are from moment to moment, from breath to breath?

Dance is the fastest, most direct route to the truth — not some big truth that belongs to everybody, but the get down and personal kind, the what’s-happening-in-me-right-now kind of truth. We dance to reclaim our brilliant ability to disappear in something bigger, something safe, a space without a critic or a judge or an analyst.

We dance to fall in love with the spirit in all things, to wipe out memory or transform it into moves that nobody else can make because they didn’t live it. We dance to hook up to the true genius lurking behind all the bullshit — to seek refuge in our originality and our power to reinvent ourselves; to shed the past, forget the future and fall into the moment feet first. Remember being fifteen, possessed by the beat, by the thrill of music pumping loud enough to drown out everything you’d ever known?

The beat is a lover that never disappoints and, like all lovers, it demands 100% surrender. It has the power to seduce moves we couldn’t dream. It grabs us by the belly, turns us inside out and leaves us abruptly begging for more. We love beats that move faster than we can think, beats that drive us ever deeper inside, that rock our worlds, break down walls and make us sweat our prayers. Prayer is moving. Prayer is offering our bones back to the dance. Prayer is letting go of everything that impedes our inner silence. God is the dance and the dance is the way to freedom and freedom is our holy work.

We dance to survive, and the beat offers a yellow brick road to make it through the chaos that is the tempo of our times. We dance to shed skins, tear off masks, crack molds, and experience the breakdown — the shattering of borders between body, heart and mind, between genders and generations, between nations and nomads. We are the transitional generation.

This is our dance.

The Joy of Movement and Our Connection!

Dancing Friends!
In Nia, we have 13 Principles to play with. Tools that bring us back to our body, and through sensation we become our own conscious personal trainer. A sensation scientist who is always exploring, discovering, and staying present in the moment to moment wonder and delight of our body.
Join Joanie and me this week, as we focus on the Joy of Movement, the first principle and the foundation upon which all other principles grow. We will be in the Joy of Movement and the sensations of our body, as we explore and play with all 13 principles of the White Belt. The Joy of Movement with the intent to incorporate all of the White Belt principles into our dance… our connection!
Today (Sunday, May 1st) we are offering a free Nia class at 4:00 pm. After class, we will be available to discuss the upcoming White Belt Intensive June 10th-16th, other White Belts on the horizon, and the benefits of going deeper into the practice of Nia… of being your own conscious personal trainer… a sensation scientist of life. Have you thought about taking the Nia White Belt? It is the first step on the Nia path and it is unlike any educational training you have ever experienced. Whether you want to become a Nia professional, dive deeper to enhance your own profession or desire personal growth, this training is for you.
Other belts will be joining us in our discussion, telling their story, and shining their light.
It will be a great week!
See you on the dance floor!
Love to all, Adelle

Sound, Your Sound, Sounding, Breath

Nia Friends!
Welcome your voice. Welcome your sound. Welcome your authenticity.
I’ve just come from another incredible weekend in Santa Fe with Adam Barley, master teacher of the 5Rhythms. Our focus for the weekend was Evolution.
In the work of Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms, there are 5 gateways that remain open through movement, so energy can flow through the body. The feet, the hips, the head, the hands and the breath.
Through our breath, we express our sound, our uniqueness, our soul. In Nia, we use sounding for release, for expression, for flexibility, agility, mobility, strength, stability, for healing.
What happens when we constrict our sound, our voice, our uniqueness? Energy becomes blocked and the body responds with tightness, pain, illness.
Let’s play with sounding in class. Bring yourSelf to class this week… your feelings and emotions, the real you, and we will focus on sounding with the intent to give your body what it needs… release, expression, visibility, explosion, contemplation… its all healing. Its all you.
Your voice. Your sound. Your authenticity.
You are unique. You are loved.
See you on the dance floor!
