Spread Your Wings and Shake Your Tail Feathers!

Dancing Friends,
We’ve had a great time over the past few weeks dancing our connective tissue/fascia, and our connection to each other. Let’s dance into our wings this week, sensing all the space we’ve created through systemically moving our fascia!
We have wings that start with our shoulder blades and extend all the way through the feathers of our fingers. We also have the wings of our pelvis that wrap our body and extend out energetically when we shake our tail feathers! I just read a great piece on shaking your tail feathers, and I’m passing it on below. 🙂
In my ‘connection quest’ for the studio, I drove to Dallas on Friday to dance, chant and sing with the kirtan performer Dave Stringer, and many friends who are connected in their love of movement and healing. After teaching on Sunday, I drove to Austin to sing with Dave Stringer again, and join the community there. After talking with Dave, we discovered mutual friends, and he is keen to come to The Synergy Studio on his next tour of Texas! I’ve been singing all day. 🙂
Sing, Chant, Dance, Connect, Love, Live, and Spread Your Wings! Life is short and precious… I’m so blessed to share it with you!
Enjoy the message below. It puts into words what I love, believe and practice daily. 🙂
Let’s fly! Adelle

Like No One Is Watching….Shake Your Tail Feathers!

Most of us express our distinctiveness in many ways throughout our lives. Although, as we proudly share our offbeat traits and preferences with the world, we take great pains to downplay those eccentricities we ourselves deem odd. Instead of living lives colored by these quirky impulses, we seek out socially acceptable outlets for our peculiarities. We may not realize that we are editing ourselves in this way because our individual societal awareness is unintentionally attuned to the attitudes of the people we encounter each day. Over time, we have learned to suppress some of the most fun aspects of individuality. To rediscover and embrace these buried traits, we need only ask ourselves what we would do if we knew for certain that no one would judge our choices.

Visualizing this day without judgment can help you better understand the idiosyncrasies that are an important part of who you are but seldom manifest themselves in your existence. Perhaps you secretly dream of replacing grown-up, conservative clothing in favor of a changing array of costumes. You may envision yourself painting your car electric-green, hugging the trees in a crowded local park, singing joyous songs as you skip through your community, or taking up an exciting hobby like fire spinning. Try not to be surprised, however, if your imagination takes you in unexpectedly simple directions. In your musings, you may see yourself doing things such as breaking out in dance or dying your hair a fun color. Regardless of the nature of your suppressed peculiarities, ask yourself what is really stopping you from making them a part of your life, and then resolve to incorporate at least one into your everyday existence.

Life as we know it is so short. Making the most of years we are granted is a matter of being ourselves even though we know that we will inevitably encounter people who disapprove of our choices. When you shake your tail feathers like no one is watching, you will discover that there are many others who appreciate you because you are willing to let go of any inhibition. By doing this you help others know it is okay. No one else in the world is precisely like you and, each time you revel in this simple fact, you rededicate yourself to the celebration of individuality.

Form to Freedom with Fascia!

Dancing Friends!
Our weekly focus continues on the fluid path…
I am fascinated by our Fascia, our connective tissue in the body. As my exploration of the fascia deepens, I am discovering more pathways to health and well-being. Visualizing my body as a network of flowing connection and sensation has brought greater appreciation for this gift, and heightened awareness of the importance of the daily dance of movement. The daily dance keeps my body in a continued state of transformation. The Freedom that grows from the Form.

Fascia is pervasive. It is everywhere in our body. Fascia lines our organs. It lines and infuses with our muscles. It helps attach our muscles to our bones. It lines our bones too. It forms pathways for our delicate nerves, arteries, and veins to run through – tunnels to transport the fluids that sustain us. Fascia is a 3 dimensional web connecting every structure in our entire body – from head to toe – without interruption. It is a continuous unit, flowing from one form to the next, changing shape and tone depending on the structure it infuses with.

Fascia is designed to protect us, to keep our internal structures properly positioned, to allow the different parts of our body to slide and glide around each other as we move, and allow our body to maintain it’s shape. If we took away everything except our fascia, we would still maintain our shape!

Free and easy movement, freedom from chronic pain, and the simple joy of being in tune with the world rely on a fluid and balanced fascial matrix.
And speaking of being in tune with the world, fluid and ready for change…

I have experienced three earthquakes in the last week. I was on the floor in child’s pose while attending a class at Spectrum… and the floor began to move. I thought I was dizzy… and then found out later it was an earthquake. I’ve been in Oklahoma with some of my kiddos and my mother the last several days. Friday night, I was awakened as the bed rocked and rolled… a 4.7 quake… and last night, Austin and I sat in the car as it rocked from side to side… a 5.2 quake! My bed last night was like a water bed all night long with the aftershocks.
The continual transformation of Earth is a great metaphor for the continual transformation of my body and connective tissue.
We keep our fascia healthy, strong, and fluid through movement. When our fascia is sedentary, it becomes sticky, fuzzy, knitted together, like scar tissue, and our shape takes on a different form. A form with less freedom… and it wants to break loose just like Mother Earth under pressure.

Nia is full, systemic, body movement, helping our fascia mold, shape, re-shape, change and be in a state of constant transformation.
“Through Movement We Find Health”… Let’s move our fascia this week… Moving our Form into Freedom!
See you on the dance floor!
Loving the transformation, Adelle

Esalen!

Fascia… our connective tissue!

Good early morning!

I just got back late evening from a magical 5 days at Esalen in California. I was at a workshop called Passionate Presence with Toni Bergins, creator of Journey Dance. We were a group of seven men and eight women… dancing, discussing, processing, playing theatre games, drawing, meditating, more dancing, rolling on the floor, laughing, crying, more dancing… and dropping into deep friendships that happened in those few short days. An over-riding focus was our fascia, or connective tissue, and the connection we all have in the world of dance, movement, and living in joy. Many ‘connections’ happened while I was there… from people coming up to me who took yoga at the studio years ago but moved away, to Nia friends who emailed me after dancing with Toni a few days earlier in Berkley… “I met Toni, and she asked if I knew Adelle…” I had numerous conversations with friends of friends, as we discovered with amazement that we knew each other.

Our body is a metaphor for life itself… The fascia that connects all the bones, muscles and organs… a beautiful, continuous sheath of tissue that loves to move, dance, express, emote, and feel connection. Just as our connection to others keeps us healthy in our body, mind, emotions and spirit, when we reach out, draw in, dance, jiggle, rock and roll on the earth, we move our connective tissue keeping it healthy and pliable.

Come dance your fascia this week with me… sense your connective tissue and your connection to others in the dance of life.

We will Journey Dance at 10:00am on Sunday… Then bring your friends back to a FREE Nia class at 4:00 with Joanie and me and stay afterwards to hear about the upcoming White Belts in December and 2012.

I am so blessed to be connected to you, and I encourage you to push your edge, go beyond, dance with others when you travel… and sense your connection to humanity.

Click here to meet Toni, creator of Journey Dance. I hope you will join us in January for a magical 5 days of connection! http://youtu.be/1iFwydZy5ns

With love, Adelle
