I’m sitting in the airport reflecting that it has been over 35 years since I taught my first dance class, and 14 years of those teaching Nia. I continue to be fascinated and awed when introducing Nia to a new community. The beginner’s eyes, mind, heart and spirit that are open to change, discovery, mystery and transformation. I am humbled at the healing power of this work, and how much our body has to teach us.
Our body is filled with ancient wisdom waiting to be revealed.
Returning to Oklahoma City, the city of my birth, introducing Nia to a new community with fellow trainers Joanie Brooks and Shannon Mairs, and getting to dance with my beautiful daughter Louisa, has been humbling and gratifying. We focused our weekend on the sensations in our body that keep us healthy and vital. It was fantastic fun… and we will focus on them this week in my classes…
FAMSS… an acronym we use in Nia to describe the five sensations of functional fitness and how they move energetically in the body.
Using your hands, open them as wide as they can go with web spaces… moving energy out…sensing Flexibility.
Now open and close them, catching flies, or dreams… energy that starts and stops.. Agility in action.
Spreading Your Light… How You Affect Others Daily
As the pace and fullness of modern life serve to isolate us from one another, the contact we do share becomes vastly more significant. We unconsciously absorb each other’s energy, adopting the temperament of those with whom we share close quarters, and find ourselves changed after the briefest encounters. Everything we do or say has the potential to affect not only the individuals we live, work, and play with but also those we’ve just met. Though we may never know the impact we have had or the scope of our influence, accepting and understanding that our attitudes and choices will affect others can help us remember to conduct ourselves with grace at all times. When we seek always to be friendly, helpful, and responsive, we effortlessly create an atmosphere around ourselves that is both uplifting and inspiring.
Most people rarely give thought to the effect they have had or will have on others. When we take a few moments to contemplate how our individual modes of being affect the people we spend time with each day, we come one step closer to seeing ourselves through the eyes of others. By asking ourselves whether those we encounter walk away feeling appreciated, respected, and liked, we can heighten our awareness of the effect we ultimately have. Something as simple as a smile given freely can temporarily brighten a person’s entire world. Our value-driven conduct may inspire others to consider whether their own lives are reflective of their values. A word of advice can help others see life in an entirely new fashion. And small gestures of kindness can even prove to those embittered by the world that goodness still exists. By simply being ourselves, we influence other’s lives in both subtle and life-altering ways.
To ensure that the effect we have is positive, we must strive to stay true to ourselves while realizing that it is the demeanor we project and not the quality of our wondrous inner landscapes that people see. Thus, as we interact with others, how we behave can be as important as who we are. If we project our passion for life, our warmth, and our tolerance in our facial features, voice, and choice of words, every person who enters our circle of influence will leave our presence feeling at peace with themselves and with us. You never know whose life you are affecting, big or small. Try to remember this as you go out into the world each day… Madisyn Taylor

Flying Friends,
Welcome to a beautiful week in San Antonio!
After spending last week in a Transformational Breathwork training, my body feels open, light, and ready to fly. I’m inspired to focus this week on our wings! Now is the moment… to dance, sing, and express yourself. Join me in class as we focus on Principle #9: The Upper Extremities of the Body…Creative Arm and Hand Expressions.
Arms that are messengers of our heart, giving voice to the silent world inside… holding, embracing, touching, loving, supporting, protecting, healing, and expressing who we are.
Hands that contain numerous proprioceptors, or sensory receptors, telling us where we are in space, guiding our movement and directing energy through touch that heals ourselves as well as others. Using ‘touch awareness,’ we use our hands to flood our body with pleasurable sensations.
Fingers that consciously direct energy, creativity and intent. Our nurturing thumb, desire pointer, power middle, commitment ring and boundary pinky, all extensions of our life force energy, our breath, our spirit.
Is that yummy or what?
Join me in the dance… A shout out to our wonderful friend and teacher Angie! She will be dancing with you Friday as I spread my wings and fly to the city of my birth to spread the Joy of Nia… If you know anyone in Oklahoma City, pass the word about the classes this coming weekend!Spread your wings, break out of your crysalis, and fly free!
And DANCE!
LoveLoveLove, Adelle
ps. Flyer about Oklahoma City classes with Joanie, Shannon, and me this weekend is below. Pass it on if you know someone in Oklahoma!
All sounds, from a whisper to a classical symphony, arise out of silence and disappear into silence. Silence is always there beneath sound and is the space where sound can exist. We tend to think of silence as the absence of sound, but silence has its own weight and quality. When you listen to silence, you can perceive its intense depth and power. Taking the time to experience silence calms the mind and rejuvenates the body. Silence is the void where we can hear the many sounds that we often ignore – the voice of our intuition telling us the truth, the sound of the breeze blowing, the soft whisper of our breath, and the noises we make just because we are alive.
This week’s dance… ChakraDancer... the culmination of focusing on heart opening, eyes opening, breath opening… a beautiful routine in silence. I will not be speaking, so you can experience the resonance of the music, your breath, and your magic. I will be queuing with my breath, as the music takes us on a journey through the energy centers of the body… each song dedicated to a Chakra.
ChakraDancer is a beautiful, grounding routine and I hope you will join me this week… sound would not exist without silence. It is vast and potent.
Loving the silence, Adelle
My Nia classes this week: Tuesday 6:45am, Wednesday 9:15am, Fun Friday 5:30pm
Friends,
Notice your breath…
When your breath is deep, steady, and rhythmic, do you feel strong, calm, energized and secure?
When your breath is shallow, nervous, erratic, or rapid, do you feel uneasy, insecure, stressed, weak?
By being aware of our breath as we dance through our day, we can relax, slow down, and bring ourselves into the present moment. Breath is our life force and has the power to heal us by simply doing what our body is designed to do, breathe.
Take a deep breath right now, and as you exhale sense how your shoulders and jaw slowly release. Take another deep breath, and exhale using sound… ‘u’… ‘o’… ‘e’… ‘a’… ‘i’… What do you sense in your body? Is your mind more clear? more quiet?
The breath is a wonderful tool we have available to us all the time… a tool that can still our mind, relax our body, and quiet our emotions.
I was delighted last weekend to spend the days dancing with the conscious dance community of Dallas, and the master Michael Molin-Skelton who brought the practice of Soul Motion and 5 Rhythms to the city.
We focused on breath… my In-spiration for this week.
I will be dancing the powerful routine ‘Chakras’ in class. Like ‘Prana’ last week, it will be an adventure for everyone, including me. I’m returning to this energized routine after 7 years! Expressing the elements of earth, wind, water, and fire, dancing to emotionally charged music, and activating the breath… It will be a fantastic week of movement!
We will dance all the way into the holiday weekend, packed with opportunities to move your body. If a natural setting is close to you, all the better. Go outside and merely notice your condition as your breath enters and leaves your body, thoughts arise and fall, scenes emerge and dissipate before your eyes, emotions rush toward and flow away. In this way we can arrive prepared to play and pray in motion.
Embrace the day… go outside… breathe… sense the space that your breath creates… you are free… fly!
You in-spire me! Adelle
Nia and ‘Chakras’ this week… Tuesday 6:45am, Wednesday 9:15am, Friday 5:30pm, Sunday 4:00pm, & Monday 5:30 subbing for Joanie.
We will focus on breathing and being breathed in Journey Dance on Sunday at 10:00am
AND a treat for you… this video captures my heart and my soul’s love of dance… Why I Dance… why I breathe.
‘Notice’: to become aware of…
As I drove back this morning from Dallas, after a wonderful weekend with Michael Molin-Skelton, 5Rhythms and Soul Motion teacher, I noticed the brightness of the sky, the sun shining through the majestic clouds, the sparkling dew on the grass.
As I sit on my patio at this moment, I am noticing the colors on my computer screen… the steam wafting from my chai tea… the reflection of the sky on standing water after the rain storm… my toes sticking out of the end of my robe.
I’m looking… I’m seeing… and I’m noticing.
This week our focus will be eye and head movements… with the intention to notice. Creating space in our body, mind, emotions and spirit just through the act of noticing.
Join in the dance as we put on fresh eyes, giving thanks for all the ways we look, see and notice. Even as our eyes age, become blurred, need glasses, or begin to view life with distortion… we have an amazing gift of sight. There is so much to notice and appreciate.
Look… See… Notice. I’ll see you on the dance floor!
Read below for some inspiring thoughts on noticing… notes I’ve picked up along the way. To notice is never-ending… like love.
Noticing your grace and beauty… Adelle
My classes this week: Tuesday 6:45am, Wednesday 9:15am, Fun Friday 5:30pm
1. Notice the steam wafting from your tea. It’s seductive and meditative.
2. Notice the breath of your children or partner. Rather than seeing them – notice the beat of their heart or sound of their breath.
3. Notice if you keep thinking of a friend you haven’t seen for a while. Ring them.
4. Notice the emotion you are cooking into your food. I happen to believe there’s more to the look, smell and nutritional value of a meal. Our meals also hold emotions. A meal cooked with love without doubt tastes divinely better. So next time you are cooking a meal – notice your emotions.
5. Notice the color of your clothes. Notice with a slowness as you choose your clothes – are the colors you are reaching for, energetically what your body is needing today.
6. Notice how you move. I do this often. Am I walking or sitting with comfort and ease? Am I rushing my body carelessly, restricting my breath or am I mindfully breathing into my belly, willing to accept the here and now?
7. Notice the next animal you see. Animals can be subtle messengers on your life’s journey. Notice the butterfly, crow or owl and connect with the message they are sending you.
8. Notice the chatter inside your head. If you notice your thoughts you can change them – if you need too.
9. Notice how you hold your body. Is your body open, relaxed and spacious or tight, closed and blocked. I’ve said a million times before – lose the frown, part the lips, release the jaw and drop your shoulders. Notice your body more often.
10. Notice if you keep hearing about a book. There’s a good chance you need to read that book.
11. Notice those feelings. Intuition is a powerful and very helpful force that arises usually in the pit of the stomach. Take time to notice what your intuitive self is telling you.
12. Notice what is around you. Notice what you are seeing, feeling and sensing – in this moment – right here and now – can be the most amazing gift of all.
13. Notice the feather on the footpath: I learned many years ago from a North American Indian that when you find a feather on the foot path in front of you, it’s a sign you are on the right track. Notice feathers.
