The Balance of Yin and Yang

“Men Men Men Men….”
My inspiration for this week’s focus comes from last Friday’s class and all the great men who joined us. You all were amazing, some brand new to Nia! Men, if you are reading my focus, gratitude is over-flowing for you. As I explained, a man could have 14 left feet and come into a Nia class, and the women will love him. Why?
Balance
Yin… right brain, creative, free, open, loving, spacious, receptive
Yang… left brain, linear, decisive, strong, giving, protective
A show of hands… who wants both in their life? 🙂 I know I do!
Yin and yang are complementary, not opposing, forces, interacting to form a whole greater than either separate part; in effect, a dynamic system. Everything and everyBody, men and women, have both yin and yang aspects… shadow cannot exist without light, sound without silence, movement without stillness, feminine without masculine.
Join me in the dance of Yin and Yang this week, highlighting two of the ‘Body’s Way’ principles… The Body Demands Balance, and The Body is Balanced in Yin and Yang.
We will celebrate and move to Miracle, one of my all time favorites. I have so many Miracles in my life and feel so blessed… you are one of those. 🙂
Joanie and I leave on Friday to officially graduate as Nia trainers with best friends from all over the world. 42 of us are descending on Portland, Oregon for a Wisdom Quest and celebration. We are extremely grateful and lucky to have so many great Nia teachers to sub for us while we are gone… Jenn, Angie, Jan, Sarita…and others on the horizon!
Keep dancing and shining your light! We will see you in a week!
Love in abunDance, Adelle

Solar Plexus Passion!

As I built a fire last week in my fireplace, and watched the flames moving so gracefully and free, I reflected on the ‘fire’ that lies within every one of us.  We are each an individual spark from the same creative fire, connected yet unique. When we are really energized in our Solar Plexus, our third chakra, we can totally step “out of the box” and become the  dynamic beings that we are all meant to be. Solar Plexus energy is about expressing ourselves as the totally unique beings that we each are. Like individual snowflakes, every human spark from the divine flame is a beautiful, unique soul ready to be fired up and fanned to life.

Deep in our Solar Plexus center lies our inner fire waiting for the fan to inspire mobility and strength. When that energy center gets “fired up”, there is no stopping us from moving forward into the full passionate expression of who we are. When our Solar Plexus is fully energized, we can step out of the box and blossom into the unique, dynamic beings that we are meant to be, beautiful spirits embodied in flesh.

Fully expressing ourselves is the fire of the Solar Plexus, and dancing this center fans the flame of grace and freedom.

Dance with me this morning, Sunday at 10:00 am, as we flame the fire of the Solar Plexus in Journey Dance. Join me this week for a dance of fire in Nia, Firedancing the 3rd Chakra, the energy center of full expression… dancing our unique, divine beauty.
Solar Plexus passion… light the fire! Yes!
See you on the dance floor!
Adelle

The Chest… Expanding, Contracting, Giving, Receiving… Love

I am honoring the words of my fellow trainer and dear friend Allison Wright for this week’s focus….
The Chest, sensing expansion and contraction.
… Chest Isolations, Shimmying, Spinal Undulations, Spinal Rolls…

I look forward to dancing Nia with you on Tuesday 6:45am, Wednesday 9:15am, and Friday 5:30pm. We will dance our beautiful chest, the center for exchanging energy. The center for giving and receiving love… expanding and contracting.
Now I Am Love, Adelle

Allison wrote the following for this month’s NiaNow newsletter:

To love means to open ourselves to the negative as well as the positive – to grief, sorrow, and disappointment as well as joy, fulfillment, and an intensity of consciousness we did not know was possible before. – Rollo May
The chest, the heart’s center, the center for exchanging energy and for giving and receiving love. I can think of no other anatomical part of the body that carries with it so many non-anatomical and emotional associations, including love, compassion, heartbreak, warmth, kindness, grief, connection, relationship, sadness, forgiveness, shame, confidence, empowerment, anger, strength. I could go on and on with the feelings commonly associated with this emotionally expressive part of the body…
As we study the chest this month, our tagline is sensing expansion and contraction. How appropriate! All emotion moves through this incredible energy center in two types of waves: expansion or contraction. Love expands my chest. Shame contracts it. Forgiveness expands it. Heartbreak contracts it. The ebb and flow of emotion, as it turns out, is not without a deeply influential effect on our bodies.
When I feel confident, self-assured, and in a place of great self-love, I sense strength, flexibility, and openness in my chest. Naturally, these are expansive sensations that I love to sense. And yet, I’ve discovered there is great beauty and lovely lessons to be learned in being comfortable with sensing contraction. My ability to be vulnerable and to allow myself to draw inward is of equal importance and validity to expanding outward.
When I sense and allow the natural contraction of my chest, I feel as though I’m giving myself permission to be fully human. It’s ok to feel exhausted. It’s ok to feel sad. It’s ok to feel introverted and need to draw inward towards myself to recharge. Through the chest, I’ve learned that health (both physical and emotional) is found via the integration of opposites – through the ability to expand and contract and knowing when is the best time to do either.
In Nia, we say that the pelvis, chest, and head house the seven primary energy centers of the body, also known as chakras. My favorite writer on this subject, PhD psychologist Anodea Judith, describes chakras as, “a center of activity that receives, assimilates, and expresses life force energy.” Chakras three and four are both situated in the bodyweight of the chest. Chakra three is all about power, autonomy, will, proactivity, and self-esteem. Chakra four is about love, relationship, balance, devotion, and intimacy.
When we work with expanding and contracting the chest (as we do with countless Nia movements), we activate these energy centers, and, in turn deeply stimulate our abdominal muscles, intercostal muscles, rib cage, spine, internal organs, and breathing. In fact, the breath itself is our most essential tool to working with expanding and contracting the chest, as our inhale and exhale do exactly this.
When you breathe, allow your breath to fill your entire chest cavity, imagining the breath filling the base of your lungs first, then expanding upwards to fill the entire chest. Inhale and sense your heart center open with flexibility, supported from behind by the strength of your upper back muscles. Exhale and allow your spine to lengthen upwards, resting into the spaciousness of your thoracic spine and chest cavity. Use the tips below to continue to breathe life into the bodyweight of your chest and to sense the dynamic interplay between expansion and contraction.
With a new year upon us, the time to focus on the chest could not be more ideal. Open, inhale, and expand into the New Year as you exhale to release what has come before, letting your heart’s center guide you into a magical year of health and wellbeing!
Tips
  • Practice deep, diaphramatic breathing techniques. Visualize your belly ascending with breath as you inhale through the nose, then descending as you exhale through the mouth. Sense your body fill with energy on the inhale, then releasing energy on the exhale.
  • Attend a class or workshop focused on pranayama (yogic breathwork).
  • Practice sounding the vowels A, E, I, O, and U and sense the reverberation of sound through your chest.
  • Lay over a yoga bolster length-wise. Allow your hips to rest on the floor, your arms and legs open wide, and your chest and spine elevated and cascading over the bolster. Sense expansion through your chest.
  • Practice the Nia moves Chest Isolations, Shimmy, Spinal Undulations, and Spinal Roll.

Now I Am Love

My one word intention for 2013… Love.

Now I Am Love.

It is one thing to say ‘love’, and yet another to truly express it through words, deeds, and acts of kindness without an expectation of return.  Last year, I began speaking more to others of my love for them… for humanity.
This year? I’m ready to let it flow.
I love you. Period. That is what I feel inside. Love for you, love for humanity. It an energy that is Universal, and an energy that is creation, growth, support, transformation.
Love is an energy that raises the vibration of the world… and is the key to positive change.
I hope to see you soon. Don’t be surprised when I express my love for you, for it is what I feel inside. Energy follows attention… my attention for 2013 is on my intention:
Now I Am Love.
Adelle
* a treat in my in-box this morning and wanted to share with you below. The Giant B12 by Kristan Kaufman. All Love.

The Giant B12

Posted by Kristin Kaufman on January 6th, 2013 :: Filed Under: A Fine Line

Recently, my home state of Arkansas was hit by a very strong snow storm (12 inches in my hometown of Hot Springs). Many were without power for days. Travelers were stranded. Just as I write in my book about  when I was stranded in New York City during the 3-day power outage a number of years ago,  these situations can bring out the best and the worst of humanity. Many good Samaritans emerged, and sadly many opportunities for kindness and generosity were missed. Does this reality present itself in our workplaces, too? Does it matter?
It seems obvious to me that it certainly does happen, and it does matter – for more than one reason. First, in a recent article  numerous studies were referenced proving that helping others boosts ‘happiness-producing’ brain chemicals which provide an emotional rush known as ‘helper’s high’. This boost is contagious. When employees help others it has been proven that it ‘goes viral’ so to speak, and the entire workplace culture shifts into a ‘pay it forward’ effect. The results were self-evident – sales were up, customer satisfaction was up, and employee satisfaction was the highest it had ever been. Secondly, the boost in our psyche translates into better overall health. We need fewer drugs (painkillers, alcohol, etc.), and we tend to actually live longer! All this has been quantified in countless studies which is simply astounding.  Talk about ROI!!
So what holds us back from simply ‘being nice and fair’ to each other at work, in our organizations, and in life in general? Why is it that sometimes we literally will stand by and ‘do nothing’ when we are clearly needed? Amazingly, the same studies share that the same ‘brain wiring’ that encourages the ‘do-gooders’ also will penalize us if we choose to help the ‘wrong people’…..aka: those that we deem as outsiders, ‘not like us’, or folks simply ‘not in our tribe’. Also, we are taught from an early age the ‘survival of the fittest’ model and the competitive nature of Capitalism. We are conditioned to believe that achievement and ‘getting’ is the key to happiness – versus fulfillment and ‘giving’. We are scared that there ‘may not be enough’ – so we hold back.
The fallacy is that these scenarios are not mutually exclusive. Amazingly – when we give we get. When we share, we receive. When others excel, so do we. I have been the recipient of kindnesses and unimaginable generosity in the workplace. Those are the leaders I valued and revered. They are the ones I would have followed into a fire – and did on more than one occasion. They were also the most successful, fulfilled, and respected.
So, what is the takeaway? What if we simply ‘started small’ in 2013 and made a conscious decision to help just one person a day? What if we chose just one person that may initially be ‘hard’ to help? We could look for what we have in common and hold tight to that commonality. Some incidents may be easier than others – that goes without saying.  Yet, what would happen if we pushed ourselves to go that extra icy mile to help and share even when it feels uncomfortable…trusting that the ‘helper’s high’…..that Giant B12 shot will be just what the doctor ordered? And the best part is we can give ourselves the B12 shot….no doctor’s appointment required.

Being You Through Your Body

Moving Tribe,

I was inspired by the words of my friend Adam Barley, master teacher of the 5Rhythms, and I wanted to send his motivating words on to you. Yes… it is about living in the body. Now.

Now I Am… present.
I hope to dance with you Sunday at 10:00am for Journey Dance and Sunday at 4:00pm for Nia… dancing our intentions… Embrace, Celebrate, Shine… Now I Am.
We will also hold Gabrielle Roth’s spirit in our dance, as we join millions across the planet dancing for this wonderful woman.
Thank you Adam!
Now I Am Love, Adelle

“A friend of mine just texted me “I feel like I’ve been on a deep healing workshop for months, with no rest – any idea how to stop it?” I replied that I think I’m on the same workshop, and no, I’ve no idea.
I just do my best to keep letting go. Which sometimes includes staying in place of course – I have noticed my mind’s tendency to get attached to anything, including letting go.
I know that I really get in a mess if I don’t do my practice enough. The times when I least feel like dancing often have the most potential of all.
Sometimes we need to dance alone in the woods, sometimes with our kids in the living room, sometimes with a group of consenting adults at a local class. Sometimes we need to dance so low and slow we never make it off the carpet. Or we’re so full of it we begin and end in chaos; that’s all there is. Every day is new.
Maybe we’ll all get a bit more hopeful now that the end of the world has been and gone, and we’re still here! Like,“oooh… maybe it’s up to me after all…” What now? What can we create? What do we choose? Do you have the courage and faith to let other people move you? To trust your impulses for expression? To surrender to life? To really take your place, day by day, and give what you can?
And if you lack the courage, do you know how to find it? I suggest getting into the experience of being you through your body. Take a deep breath and be physical.
… Gabrielle’s memorial is next week. More information about that here. If you aren’t going, you might want to light a candle or dance a step in gratitude for this woman’s extraordinary contribution. You’ll be one of a wave all round the world.
Feet first my friends
May we all have the year we truly need

Embrace, Celebrate, Shine! 2013 has arrived!

At The Synergy Studio, we like to dedicate the sacred year to a single purpose… an over-arching theme.

Announcing 2013…
The Year of Now I Am… Embrace, Celebrate, Shine!

As sacred athletes of life, we live in the moment, embracing who we are, celebrating our uniqueness, and shining our light as we share with others.
One word ‘resolutions’, or affirmations, are available to us every day, every moment as we embrace the one constant of life, change. The mere fact that every cell in the human body is renewed every seven years affirms that we can embrace positive change, celebrate, and shineWe have one word affirmations that support us throughout the year, as well as others that pop up daily when we need them.
Now I Am… Healthy, Happy, Flexible, Joyful, Positive, Resolved, Enthusiastic, Agile, Loving, Graceful, Friendly, Directed, Mobile, Soft, Quiet, Strong, Open, Aware, Attentive, Stable….
The list is never-ending, like change.

Bring your affirmations to class this week. We will write them down and dance them as we embrace we we are, celebrate our uniqueness, and shine our light.
N… I… A… Now I Am.
Now I Am Love, Adelle

Sacred Hands… Happy Holidays!

Sacred: dedicated or devoted exclusively to a single use, purpose or person.*American Heritage dictionary

Sacred is a special word in the English language. It is descended from the Latin word sacrum, which referred to the gods or anything within their power. It also refers to the base of your spine, those beautiful fused bones that turn in, creating a hand that supports you from underneath and behind. Amazing… the human body… a sacred vessel of life.

As we close the Year of the Sacred Athlete at The Synergy Studio, I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation for you and the abundance of your spirit. We are an amazing community of friends, healers, lovers of life and givers of light. You have enriched my life in so many ways and I am forever blessed. Thank you!

Join me this week as we dance our hands, giving light, love and healing. We will move to the very special and sacred dance of Sanctuary… a routine I save for special times of the year. Sunday at 4:00pm. And join me on Sunday morning for Journey Dance at 10:00am… a wonderful way to give praise and thanksgiving for this beautiful season… through our hands we give and receive… through movement we heal.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyBody!

December 21… A day of dance and celebration! Occupy Your Body, Awaken Your Heart!

Tomorrow… Friday, December 21st… a Day of Dance!

photo credits: Michael Julien Berz (with Adam Barley)

Tomorrow is a special day in many ways.  It is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, and it marks the beginning of the Sun’s accent into the sky.  In Latin, solstice means “sun set still”, and Winter Solstice is the great stillness. December 21, 2012 is also the date recorded in stone by the Ancient Maya over 1300 years ago indicating the completion of a World Age Cycle.  It is a day we are invited to synchronize with all life in the Universe and to begin a new World consciousness fired by love, compassion, gratitude and peace.  Awakening to our Self-Generation, we are called to unify with all hearts and minds for Universal healing. All over the world people are dancing in celebration of this special day!

Its a day to Occupy Your Body and Awaken Your Heart!

There are many opportunities to celebrate this day at The Synergy Studio:
8:00 am JourneyDance™ with Jan and Zet
9:15 am Nia with Jenn
5:30 pm Nia with Adelle
6:45 pm JourneyDance™ with Joanie

And join me Sunday morning at 10:00 am for JourneyDance™… a celebration of music, movement  and magic as we occupy our body and awaken our heart to the dance of life!

Ahhhh…. a magical weekend indeed!

You are the Warrior: your power, your intentions, your life’s journey. JourneyDance™ will move you through deep, personal exploration into a loving, intimate relationship with body, mind, and source energy. This sensual and exhilarating union of dance, visualization, and ritual calls us to get funky and divine!  In a shamanic style, the Journey carries us through an intentional and seamless flow of guided ritual and free expression. We embody our physical temple, unleashing animal energies and awakening sensuality. We connect with the inner shaman creator to release the mind’s clogging clutter and make space for the abundance of joy available to us. We explore our inner realms of the heart, listening deeply. We express ourselves as soul and ride our pranic energy flow into prayer. As we create this powerful dancing ritual together, we elevate the body and mind to our highest vibration. JourneyDance™ for nourishment, energy, presence, and prayer. Come, travel this sacred and provocative journey.

Passion… Bring it on!

pas·sion  /ˈpaSHən/

  1. Strong and barely controllable emotion.
  2. A state or outburst of such emotion.

Ahhhhhh!!! Is our weather de-light-filled or what? It makes me want to sing… to shake my tail… to dance! Bring on the passion!

Yesterday, Joanie and I had the honor of graduating 4 new Nia White Belts, Cassendra Keys and Maria Palmer from San Antonio, Bianca Rodriguez from Laredo, and Ronda Bartley from Oklahoma.  Everybody say “HEY! YEAAAA!”  They are now starting their Nia journey and stepping into this world to share their gifts with passion.
In celebration of a great week of new friends, learning, and transformation, we will focus on ‘Dancing to the Music’ with the intent to bring on the passion… the gift and birthright that was given to us in this life… a body that loves to move, express, dance.

I came across a great article on “6 Ways to Combat Depression.” I realized when reading it that Nia, Journey Dance, Conscious Dance, Movement fit in every category in some way. As we dance through this beautiful season, let us be mindful of those who are facing depression, or if we sense it in ourselves… and how we can invite our friends along to combat the blues…
We can DANCE! Ahhhhhh!!!! Now that is Passion!

Here is a synopsis of the article, with the full monty linked below. 🙂
I LOVE you all so much… thank you for dancing through life with me.
