Sound, Sensation, Self!

Its a Sound, Sensation, Self week!

There is a thrill when we investigate unfamiliar territory and discover new ways of moving, thinking, feeling, and expressing. The presence of change and living in the ‘now’ can cause discomfort as our body, mind, emotions and spirit transform, mold, and shape-shift. The inevitability of change can also inspire us to explore topics that we formerly eschewed because they caused us a certain amount of discomfort. This open-minded approach to learning and expansion applies to our movement, as we explore new ways of expressing our uniqueness.

Let’s play with Sound and Sensation this week, as we investigate uncharted ways of moving our Self. Using familiar steps and stances that our body recognizes, we will explore the creativity of our unique dance, finding our voice, our primal sounds, doing something different, and discovering the multitude of ways our body can express itSelf.

We are excited to introduce the new routine Touch at the weekend immersion March 1-3. Touch uses four ‘Touchstones’ as the focus… Eyes, Skin, Breath and Sound. As we play with sound this week, notice how sounds touch your body, inside and out… resonance, vibration, harmony, melody… they are all a part of life. Supported by silence, sound creates a music that gives us a background to dance through life.
Students and supporters of Nia… Join us for Touch classes on Friday, March 1 at 5:30 and Saturday, March 2 at 9:30… then again Sunday, March 3 at 2:30 for a “Learn the Move” experience of Touch, followed by the 4:00 class. Sign up here for the Sunday playshop, including the CD.
Teachers and Licensed Belts of Nia… Join us for Touch classes Friday and Saturday, and stay on Saturday for the Touch Routine Immersion learning experience! Contact Joanie about receiving the bars and pearls.

For No Reason…

Now I Am… choosing to be creative, childlike, free.  I can choose moment to moment… ahhhh…. life is so rich!

And for no reason I start skipping like a child.
And for no reason I turn into a leaf That is carried so high I kiss the sun’s mouth and dissolve.
And for no reason a thousand birds choose my head for a conference table, start passing their cups of wine and their wild songbooks all around.
And for every reason in existence I begin to eternally laugh and love!
When I turn into a leaf and start dancing, I run to kiss our beautiful Friend and I dissolve into the Truth That I Am.
~Hafiz, an ancient Sufi Poet.

Incredible, Intelligent, Fearless and Strong… I see you!

Good morning dancing de-light-filled friends!

“I see you…I see your Greatness.”  I have just returned from Portland where 48 Nia trainers from around the world gathered to collaborate and co-create the new face of Nia.  Nia, just like our body and our life is constantly changing, growing and expanding, and I am so honored and grateful to be part of this amazing group of men and women.  Many times during our full days of dancing and sharing of wisdom, Debbie Rosas, co-founder and CEO of Nia, thanked us and told us “I see you.  I see each of you and I see your Greatness.”   I have shared the moment with you in pictures below.
As we accepted our red belt, she reminded each of us to see Greatness in ourselves. Seeing our Greatness is not about being great.  It is opening our hearts and our eyes to the possibilities before us and our unique potential.  It is being a Sacred Athlete.
The eyes are the entry into our soul.  There is so much that is revealed through our eyes.  I can look at someone and by looking at their eyes I can tell how they are feeling at the moment.  Our eyes are communicators and communicate all our emotions:  love, excitement, anger, sorrow, compassion, apprehension, curiosity.  Our eyes reveal what is happening inside.  Have you ever looked at a loved ones eyes and known they were not feeling well?

In Nia we learn to use our eyes in new and exciting ways.  In principle 5, Awareness and Dancing Through Life, we are invited to look out and change our perception, be inspired and see art in all of life.  In Principle 8, The Core of the Body, we learn to use Head and Eye movements as the most organic way to move our head and neck, and integrate the rest of our body. Look and let your eyes move you naturally with grace, ease and efficiency.  In Principle 10, X-Ray Anatomy, we are invited to see without seeing and sense what is underneath our skin and make alignment changes that bring our body into homeostatis… into balance and peace.  We also learn to look at our body and the body of others through non-judgemental eyes for information, making choices to move our bodies toward pleasure and wellness.

Nia always invites us to see ourselves with love.  Not until I can see myself with love, as love, and see my Greatness, will I be able to see others as love and see their Greatness.  Nia has opened my eyes to potential and possibilities and has connected me to the visual magic around me so I can see and receive life with curiosity and wonderment.  As I step back into my life here in San Antonio I want to express my gratitude and love for each of you. I see in you the wonderful human being that you are, and the difference you make in this world and in my life.  I see you and I see your Greatness!

See you in class!

Strength in Numbers

As I’m preparing for the third day of our Wisdom Quest in Portland, Oregon, I am reflecting on the gift of words of wisdom and affirmation in my daily horoscope.
The Nia faculty is 48 strong…gathered here to do what we love, explore the possibilities, share our ideas, and live into our greatness. The passion for the work of Nia is palpable and tingling in everyBody. I deeply admire and appreciate the dedication and time of so many… dedicated to bringing the Joy of living life in a body to the world.
We are indeed…. Strength in Numbers… abunDance creates abunDance.
And it is All Love.

Strength in Numbers
Aquarius Daily Horoscope

Today, a companionable mood can prompt you to seek out and spend time with people whose company you value. In addition to the pleasures of companionship you enjoy during social interaction, you may discover that the connection you share with others serves yet another purpose. If you invite your loved ones and respected colleagues to work with you on a project or to help you cope with some difficulty, you will likely be surprised at how much less trying the objectives before you become. When your talents and aptitudes meet those of your companions today, you can each do more than you might otherwise be capable of accomplishing.

The companions that stand by our sides as we make our way through life contribute so much to our overall wellbeing while ensuring that we are capable of fulfilling our potential. A single individual’s strengths are limited because the blessings they have been granted are specific to their perspective and their circumstances. When we come together with people we care deeply about, however, these limitations are rendered moot. Our talents and aptitudes merge with those of our companions while we work side by side to achieve a common goal, and the weaknesses that might otherwise stay us are cancelled out by our collaboration. The connections that bond us to one another also strengthen us immeasurably, expanding the range of our shared potential. As you enjoy the company of the people you like and love today, your confidence levels will soar, allowing you to prosper with little effort.

Change… Expanding Your Comfort Zone

I woke up to these wise words this morning. Words that are an affirmation of my life, and the change that is inevitable… for change is the only guarantee of each day.  With each breath, each movement, each moment, we experience change. Expanding our comfort zone can be frightening… yet I choose to be excited. The unknown, the river of new that always flows… I’m ready to ride the waves.
Welcome change, expansion, transformation!

The Boundaries of Experience…  Madisyn Taylor
Expanding Your Comfort Zone

Your current comfort zone has served you, but it represents your behaviors and patterns from your past.

None of us are born with a guidebook that provides explicit rules for thought and behavior that will enable us to navigate life successfully. To cope with the myriad of complexities to which all of humanity is subject, we each develop a set of habits and routines that ground us, their continuity assuring us that life is progressing normally. Most of us know, whether instinctively or by experience, that transformations can be uncomfortable, but we always learn and gain so much. Any initial discomfort we experience when expanding our comfort zones diminishes gradually as we both become accustomed to change and begin to understand that temporary discomfort is a small price to pay for the evolution of our soul.

Your current comfort zone did, at one time, serve a purpose in your life. But it is representative of behaviors and patterns of thought that empowered you to cope with challenges of days past. Now, this comfort zone does little to facilitate the growth you wish to achieve in the present. Leaving your comfort zone behind through personal expansion of any kind can prepare you to take the larger leaps of faith that will, in time, help you refine your purpose. Work your way outward at your own pace, and try not to let your discomfort interfere with your resolve. With the passage of each well-earned triumph, you will have grown and your comfort zone will have expanded to accommodate this evolution.

Whether your comfort zone is living with your parents, or perhaps being too shy to socialize, or maybe it’s not realizing your spirit self—whatever it is, start small, and you will discover that venturing beyond the limited comfort zone you now cling to is not as stressful an experience as you imagined it might be. And the joy you feel upon challenging yourself in this way will nearly always outweigh your discomfort. As you continue to expand your comfort zone to include new ideas, activities, goals, and experiences, you will see that you are capable of stimulating change and coping with the fresh challenges that accompany it.

The Balance of Yin and Yang

“Men Men Men Men….”
My inspiration for this week’s focus comes from last Friday’s class and all the great men who joined us. You all were amazing, some brand new to Nia! Men, if you are reading my focus, gratitude is over-flowing for you. As I explained, a man could have 14 left feet and come into a Nia class, and the women will love him. Why?
Balance
Yin… right brain, creative, free, open, loving, spacious, receptive
Yang… left brain, linear, decisive, strong, giving, protective
A show of hands… who wants both in their life? 🙂 I know I do!
Yin and yang are complementary, not opposing, forces, interacting to form a whole greater than either separate part; in effect, a dynamic system. Everything and everyBody, men and women, have both yin and yang aspects… shadow cannot exist without light, sound without silence, movement without stillness, feminine without masculine.
Join me in the dance of Yin and Yang this week, highlighting two of the ‘Body’s Way’ principles… The Body Demands Balance, and The Body is Balanced in Yin and Yang.
We will celebrate and move to Miracle, one of my all time favorites. I have so many Miracles in my life and feel so blessed… you are one of those. 🙂
Joanie and I leave on Friday to officially graduate as Nia trainers with best friends from all over the world. 42 of us are descending on Portland, Oregon for a Wisdom Quest and celebration. We are extremely grateful and lucky to have so many great Nia teachers to sub for us while we are gone… Jenn, Angie, Jan, Sarita…and others on the horizon!
Keep dancing and shining your light! We will see you in a week!
Love in abunDance, Adelle

Solar Plexus Passion!

As I built a fire last week in my fireplace, and watched the flames moving so gracefully and free, I reflected on the ‘fire’ that lies within every one of us.  We are each an individual spark from the same creative fire, connected yet unique. When we are really energized in our Solar Plexus, our third chakra, we can totally step “out of the box” and become the  dynamic beings that we are all meant to be. Solar Plexus energy is about expressing ourselves as the totally unique beings that we each are. Like individual snowflakes, every human spark from the divine flame is a beautiful, unique soul ready to be fired up and fanned to life.

Deep in our Solar Plexus center lies our inner fire waiting for the fan to inspire mobility and strength. When that energy center gets “fired up”, there is no stopping us from moving forward into the full passionate expression of who we are. When our Solar Plexus is fully energized, we can step out of the box and blossom into the unique, dynamic beings that we are meant to be, beautiful spirits embodied in flesh.

Fully expressing ourselves is the fire of the Solar Plexus, and dancing this center fans the flame of grace and freedom.

Dance with me this morning, Sunday at 10:00 am, as we flame the fire of the Solar Plexus in Journey Dance. Join me this week for a dance of fire in Nia, Firedancing the 3rd Chakra, the energy center of full expression… dancing our unique, divine beauty.
Solar Plexus passion… light the fire! Yes!
See you on the dance floor!

The Chest… Expanding, Contracting, Giving, Receiving… Love

I am honoring the words of my fellow trainer and dear friend Allison Wright for this week’s focus….
The Chest, sensing expansion and contraction.
… Chest Isolations, Shimmying, Spinal Undulations, Spinal Rolls…

I look forward to dancing Nia with you on Tuesday 6:45am, Wednesday 9:15am, and Friday 5:30pm. We will dance our beautiful chest, the center for exchanging energy. The center for giving and receiving love… expanding and contracting.
Now I Am Love, Adelle

Allison wrote the following for this month’s NiaNow newsletter:

To love means to open ourselves to the negative as well as the positive – to grief, sorrow, and disappointment as well as joy, fulfillment, and an intensity of consciousness we did not know was possible before. – Rollo May
The chest, the heart’s center, the center for exchanging energy and for giving and receiving love. I can think of no other anatomical part of the body that carries with it so many non-anatomical and emotional associations, including love, compassion, heartbreak, warmth, kindness, grief, connection, relationship, sadness, forgiveness, shame, confidence, empowerment, anger, strength. I could go on and on with the feelings commonly associated with this emotionally expressive part of the body…
As we study the chest this month, our tagline is sensing expansion and contraction. How appropriate! All emotion moves through this incredible energy center in two types of waves: expansion or contraction. Love expands my chest. Shame contracts it. Forgiveness expands it. Heartbreak contracts it. The ebb and flow of emotion, as it turns out, is not without a deeply influential effect on our bodies.
When I feel confident, self-assured, and in a place of great self-love, I sense strength, flexibility, and openness in my chest. Naturally, these are expansive sensations that I love to sense. And yet, I’ve discovered there is great beauty and lovely lessons to be learned in being comfortable with sensing contraction. My ability to be vulnerable and to allow myself to draw inward is of equal importance and validity to expanding outward.
When I sense and allow the natural contraction of my chest, I feel as though I’m giving myself permission to be fully human. It’s ok to feel exhausted. It’s ok to feel sad. It’s ok to feel introverted and need to draw inward towards myself to recharge. Through the chest, I’ve learned that health (both physical and emotional) is found via the integration of opposites – through the ability to expand and contract and knowing when is the best time to do either.
In Nia, we say that the pelvis, chest, and head house the seven primary energy centers of the body, also known as chakras. My favorite writer on this subject, PhD psychologist Anodea Judith, describes chakras as, “a center of activity that receives, assimilates, and expresses life force energy.” Chakras three and four are both situated in the bodyweight of the chest. Chakra three is all about power, autonomy, will, proactivity, and self-esteem. Chakra four is about love, relationship, balance, devotion, and intimacy.
When we work with expanding and contracting the chest (as we do with countless Nia movements), we activate these energy centers, and, in turn deeply stimulate our abdominal muscles, intercostal muscles, rib cage, spine, internal organs, and breathing. In fact, the breath itself is our most essential tool to working with expanding and contracting the chest, as our inhale and exhale do exactly this.
When you breathe, allow your breath to fill your entire chest cavity, imagining the breath filling the base of your lungs first, then expanding upwards to fill the entire chest. Inhale and sense your heart center open with flexibility, supported from behind by the strength of your upper back muscles. Exhale and allow your spine to lengthen upwards, resting into the spaciousness of your thoracic spine and chest cavity. Use the tips below to continue to breathe life into the bodyweight of your chest and to sense the dynamic interplay between expansion and contraction.
With a new year upon us, the time to focus on the chest could not be more ideal. Open, inhale, and expand into the New Year as you exhale to release what has come before, letting your heart’s center guide you into a magical year of health and wellbeing!
Tips
  • Practice deep, diaphramatic breathing techniques. Visualize your belly ascending with breath as you inhale through the nose, then descending as you exhale through the mouth. Sense your body fill with energy on the inhale, then releasing energy on the exhale.
  • Attend a class or workshop focused on pranayama (yogic breathwork).
  • Practice sounding the vowels A, E, I, O, and U and sense the reverberation of sound through your chest.
  • Lay over a yoga bolster length-wise. Allow your hips to rest on the floor, your arms and legs open wide, and your chest and spine elevated and cascading over the bolster. Sense expansion through your chest.
  • Practice the Nia moves Chest Isolations, Shimmy, Spinal Undulations, and Spinal Roll.

Now I Am Love

My one word intention for 2013… Love.

Now I Am Love.

It is one thing to say ‘love’, and yet another to truly express it through words, deeds, and acts of kindness without an expectation of return.  Last year, I began speaking more to others of my love for them… for humanity.
This year? I’m ready to let it flow.
I love you. Period. That is what I feel inside. Love for you, love for humanity. It an energy that is Universal, and an energy that is creation, growth, support, transformation.
Love is an energy that raises the vibration of the world… and is the key to positive change.
I hope to see you soon. Don’t be surprised when I express my love for you, for it is what I feel inside. Energy follows attention… my attention for 2013 is on my intention:
Now I Am Love.
Adelle
* a treat in my in-box this morning and wanted to share with you below. The Giant B12 by Kristan Kaufman. All Love.

The Giant B12

Posted by Kristin Kaufman on January 6th, 2013 :: Filed Under: A Fine Line

Recently, my home state of Arkansas was hit by a very strong snow storm (12 inches in my hometown of Hot Springs). Many were without power for days. Travelers were stranded. Just as I write in my book about  when I was stranded in New York City during the 3-day power outage a number of years ago,  these situations can bring out the best and the worst of humanity. Many good Samaritans emerged, and sadly many opportunities for kindness and generosity were missed. Does this reality present itself in our workplaces, too? Does it matter?
It seems obvious to me that it certainly does happen, and it does matter – for more than one reason. First, in a recent article  numerous studies were referenced proving that helping others boosts ‘happiness-producing’ brain chemicals which provide an emotional rush known as ‘helper’s high’. This boost is contagious. When employees help others it has been proven that it ‘goes viral’ so to speak, and the entire workplace culture shifts into a ‘pay it forward’ effect. The results were self-evident – sales were up, customer satisfaction was up, and employee satisfaction was the highest it had ever been. Secondly, the boost in our psyche translates into better overall health. We need fewer drugs (painkillers, alcohol, etc.), and we tend to actually live longer! All this has been quantified in countless studies which is simply astounding.  Talk about ROI!!
So what holds us back from simply ‘being nice and fair’ to each other at work, in our organizations, and in life in general? Why is it that sometimes we literally will stand by and ‘do nothing’ when we are clearly needed? Amazingly, the same studies share that the same ‘brain wiring’ that encourages the ‘do-gooders’ also will penalize us if we choose to help the ‘wrong people’…..aka: those that we deem as outsiders, ‘not like us’, or folks simply ‘not in our tribe’. Also, we are taught from an early age the ‘survival of the fittest’ model and the competitive nature of Capitalism. We are conditioned to believe that achievement and ‘getting’ is the key to happiness – versus fulfillment and ‘giving’. We are scared that there ‘may not be enough’ – so we hold back.
The fallacy is that these scenarios are not mutually exclusive. Amazingly – when we give we get. When we share, we receive. When others excel, so do we. I have been the recipient of kindnesses and unimaginable generosity in the workplace. Those are the leaders I valued and revered. They are the ones I would have followed into a fire – and did on more than one occasion. They were also the most successful, fulfilled, and respected.
So, what is the takeaway? What if we simply ‘started small’ in 2013 and made a conscious decision to help just one person a day? What if we chose just one person that may initially be ‘hard’ to help? We could look for what we have in common and hold tight to that commonality. Some incidents may be easier than others – that goes without saying.  Yet, what would happen if we pushed ourselves to go that extra icy mile to help and share even when it feels uncomfortable…trusting that the ‘helper’s high’…..that Giant B12 shot will be just what the doctor ordered? And the best part is we can give ourselves the B12 shot….no doctor’s appointment required.
